Saturday is National Trading Card Day

Free sample cards will be given away across the nation.

Visitors to The Sports Angle on Saturday will get some collector’s edition trading cards for free as part of National Trading Card Day, according to Steve DeLeon, owner.
The store is located at 522 N. Main Street in Clovis, and is one of some 800 participating card stores across the country, he said.
“Everybody who comes in will get a packet of cards,” DeLeon said.
The packet will contain more than 50 cards, produced in a cooperative effort by the country’s leading sports card manufacturers.
Among athletes to be featured on the cards are Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez, Brett Favre, Michael Vick, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Joe Thornton, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tiger Woods, according to a news release.
DeLeon said he also has other plans for the day, with tickets for prize drawings, balloons to pop to reveal various other prizes, and gift certificates.
“I’m still working on it,” DeLeon said Monday. “It’s a big deal. This is the first year the trading card companies are doing this.”
Visitors will be able to trade cards among each other, based on the book price of each card, he said.
“We want to bring new people into this hobby — collecting cards,” he said.
Visitors will also receive booklets offering information about card collecting, the history of the hobby and tips on starting and maintaining a collection, the news release states.
The Sports Angle will open at noon Saturday.
