Clovis coach Darren Kelley knows winning Saturday’s Clovis Invitational was little more than a formality. He knows the quality of competition over the next three weeks will be greatly improved.

It’s what he doesn’t know that keeps the fifth-year Wildcats boys track coach awake at nights.

“By the time Wildcat Relays (April 16) come around, we’ll know if we’re a Top 5 team or a Top 10 team in New Mexico,” Kelley said.

Clovis was the class of the 10-team boys field at Saturday breezy Leon Williams Stadium.

Led by senior Ben Teconchuk, Clovis dominated the sprints and relays while piling up 150 points. Belen was second with 96 points, followed by Clovis’ District 4-5A rivals Carlsbad and Hobbs with 62 and 46 points respectively.

In the girls meet, Clovis finished a distant third behind a pair of quality Texas schools in Odessa High and Canyon.

Teconchuk swept the 100 and 200 meters — with teammates on his tail — and also ran legs on Clovis’ 400- and 800-meter relays that won in state-qualifying times.

“Being a senior, it wouldn’t look too good if I get beat by a junior and a sophomore,” Teconchuk said. “When they’re pushing me, it makes it a lot better.

“The big thing is we need to continue to improve. And the only way we’re going to be better is to keep working.”

In their second meet of a still young season, the Wildcats also picked up wins from senior Charles Purdy in the shot (49-5), junior Tanner Williams in the long jump (21-3) and freshman Brian Mead in the 110 hurdles (15.52).

Only a second in the 1600 medley kept Clovis was sweeping the relays.

“It is good for some of our young kids to compete and win something,” Kelley said. “The thing that I really liked is we improved on our times.

“We have so many young kids. It takes time for them to learn what it takes to compete.”

The girls meet wasn’t decide until the final event. Canyon breezed to an easy win in the 1,600-meter relay, but Odessa’s second-place was enough to hold off the Eagles by the slimmest of margins — 127 1/2 to 127.

Clovis picked up the bulk of its 65 points from senior Monique Walker and in field events, led by senior Tyisha Brown’s in the shot and Renata Porterfield’s second-place finish in the discus.

Lady Wildcats coach Darrell Ray said his team has a long way to go before they can be considered a state contender.
“We improved in a lot of ways, but we still got so many holes to fill,” Ray said. “And it’s going to take two or three weeks to fill them.”

“I told our coaches not to panic. There’s lots of work to do, but there’s no reason to panic. It’s still early.”

Walker was second in the 200, fourth in the long jump and also anchored the Lady Cats to a second-place finish in the 400 relay and a third in the 800 relay.
