Fortunato “Nato” Martinez, 78, of Clovis, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
He was born on Oct. 31, 1925, in La Junta, Colo., to Vicente and Nieves Moreno Martinez.
He served in the U.S. Army and family members said he received the Purple Heart during World War II. He married Grace Tenorio on June 28, 1946, in Clovis. He worked for the railroad and later in the civil service at Cannon Air Force Base.
He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion Post 25, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3280 and AMVETS.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, Leo Denise and Robert Martinez; his parents; two brothers, Joe and Manuel Martinez; a sister, Delfina Reyes; a grandson, Eric Semenec; and step-father Antonio “Nano” Herrera.
Survivors include eight daughters, Lizzie Martinez of Albuquerque, Marce (and husband Andy) Zielinski of Las Vegas, Nev., Leona Cottman of Goldsboro, N.C., Karen Semenec of Fall River, Mass., Barbara (John) Battista of Las Vegas, Darlene (Darren) Ewing of Wichita Falls, Texas, Rosemary (Gilbert) Martinez-Villa of Clovis, and Rachel Martinez of Goldsboro; three sons, David Martinez, Jimmy (Joann) Martinez, and Leo Martinez, all of Clovis; two sisters, Beatrice (Casey) Saiz and LaLa Worley of Clovis; 31 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Angel Martinez, Bruno Hernandez, Patrick Maes, Lorenzo Lorado, John Battista and Mike Barela.
