Lady Cats finally get bats going

Annie Tweedy finally got some help in the hitting department.

The Clovis High junior capped a 7-for-10 weekend, including a pair of home runs, with three hits and three RBI in Saturday’s 10-0 rout of Perryton in the third-place game of the Clovis Invitational softball tournament at Lady Wildcat Complex.

After splitting a pair of nail-biters in less-than-ideal weather conditions in pool play Friday, including a 6-5 win over Lovington late Friday with a six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Cats cruised on Saturday behind the four-hit pitching of senior Paige Adare.

Hobbs claimed the tournament championship with a 12-1 thumping of Lea County rival Lovington.

Tweedy went 3-for-3 against Perryton with a triple in the first, an RBI double in the third and a run-scoring single in the fifth. Shortstop Laura Wood added 3-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring two, while catcher Alicia Odom went 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI.

“We hit the ball better today,” CHS coach Larry Trower said. “We didn’t hit the ball very well against Hereford and Lovington.

“Paige threw well in all three games. She pitched well enough to win all three.”

The Lady Cats took control early against Perryton, scoring twice in the first and never looking back. They ended the game on the 10-run rule on Wood’s two-run double with no one out in bottom of the fifth.

“We did really good,” said Tweedy, the Lady Cats’ third baseman. “We came together real good after having to practice inside all week.

“We got a lot more aggressive (against Perryton). I think the butterflies finally left; I was nervous yesterday, especially as cold as it was. And the delay (for rain and hail during the tournament opener between Hobbs and Perryton) didn’t help.”

Adare was sharp against the Rangerettes (7-9), striking out six — including five in a row in the second and third — and walking one.

Clovis totaled 10 hits in Friday’s two pool games, but collected nine knocks against Perryton.

“We have a better idea now of what we have,” Trower said. “(The tournament) gave us a chance to work people in different positions. We learned a lot this weekend. I think the girls settled in (during) this last game.”

On Friday, the Lady Cats forced extra innings against Hereford with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wood drove in one with a single and then rode home on Tweedy’s inside-the-park homer.

But three Clovis errors allowed the Herd to score three times in the top of the eighth without benefit of a hit.

Tweedy went 3-for-4 and senior Christina Chavez was 2-for-3 to account for all but one of the Lady Cats’ six hits.

Lovington’s Stephanie Ganaway carried a 5-0 lead and a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Cats erupted with the help of four hits and five Lovington errors, capped by Valerie Morris’ game-winning RBI double.

Tweedy led off with a home run, while Cynthia Lucio added a two-run single to get Clovis within 5-4.
