A. D. McDonald, 93, of Texico, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 14, 1910, to Robert and Effie Mae Cambell McDonald in Santa Anna, Texas.
He was a retired school superintendent.
He married Gladys Singleterry on Dec. 15, 1935, in Clovis.
He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in the first associate’s degree program. He also was in the first bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and played on the first basketball team at ENMU, family members said.
He taught and coached basketball at Pleasant Hill, then went to Texico to teach and coach basketball before becoming the principal of Texico High School.
In 1963 he became superintendent of the Texico Schools, retiring in 1975.
He was a member of Central Christian Church, where he taught Sunday school for 35 years, and was a life member of the Texico Farwell Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a sister, Ruth Hooper; and five brothers; Ollie, Arthur, Hubert, Carl and Bill.
Survivors include five sisters; Pearl Woody of Amarillo, Jewell Milne of Tucson, Ariz., Imogene Mangus of Los Banos, Calif., Johnnie Brown of Clovis and Pauline Owen of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Services will be officiated by Central Christian Church Pastor Larry Tedrow.
Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.
Pallbearers will be R.L. Richards, Don Leavell, Fred Chandler, Pete Davis, Carey Joe Magness and Joe Jones.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Children’s Home in Portales or the Cal Farley Boys Ranch in Amarillo.
