Ralph Black, 93, of Portales died Monday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was born on June 24, 1910, in Stafford County, Kan., to Cynthia Cora and Harry Gordon Black.
From 1934 until 1938 he owned and operated his own printing shop in Portales. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1942. He went on to earn a master’s degree in 1948 from Colorado Sate College of Education, and in 1959 he completed his doctorate in education at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. He taught industrial education at ENMU from 1938 until his retirement in 1969. He married Pearl Smiley on Aug. 14, 1940, in Hutchinson, Kan. After her death in 1984, he married Helen Worthington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Vera Cleary and Helen Riggenbach; and by both his wives.
Survivors include three sons, Ron Black (and wife, Jan) of Hobbs, Col. Richard Black (Sue) of Fayetteville, N.C. and Doug Black (Susan) of Albuquerque; two step-sons, Jim Bob Worthington (Tina) of Mesa, Ariz., and Monty Worthington of Prescott, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Cindy Johnson (Rick) of Mesa; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Circle of Ozark, Ala., and Lois Cantrell of Portales.
Kenneth Broad will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Marlin Poynor, Bill Rosin, Webb Smartnick, David Wells, Al Bettina, Dewey Langston, Wyley Teel and Bill Dalley.
