Mrs. Lethaonua Russell, 96, of Portales, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2003, at the home of her granddaughter in Bakersfield, Calif.
She was born on Oct. 24, 1907, in Cleveland, Tenn., to Mercer and Ida Mae Cardin Gregory.
Her family moved to New Mexico in 1914 and settled at Lingo. She went to school at the old Lingo school. She married G.M. “Geach” Russell in 1924. They made their home at Lingo until 1958 when they moved to Portales. For several years she was employed at the Selected Casings Plant in Portales. Family members said she enjoyed collecting antique dolls and making their clothes, walking and playing canasta with her family. She liked to quilt and can. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, O.C. “Doc” Gregory and Pete Gregory; two sisters, Mary Lou Hart and Ana Belle Ahern; a daughter, Helen Russell; and by her husband.
Survivors include a son, Harvey Lee Russell of Blackwell, Texas; a daughter, Hazel Dean Pederson of Lubbock; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joe Gregory and Mercer Gregory, both of Weatherford, Okla., and Earl Gregory of Silver Springs, Nev.; a sister, Twilight Young of Cold Water, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews
Larry Russell and Scott Reeves will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be great-grandsons, Brandon and Byron Lancaster, Nathan Pesch, Tyler Hebert, Hayden Goff and Ryan Muthana.
The family will gather at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Roosevelt County Electric Coop Hospitality Room in Portales.
