Routine win puts Cats into semifinals

SANTA FE — Maybe it’s high expectations that left Clovis coach J.D. Isler disappointed after a 27-point win. Or maybe it’s just part of being a coach, he said.

“I was hoping we’d play a little sharper,” Isler said after a 60-33 win over St. Michael’s on Thursday in the first round of the Capital City Invitational at Santa Fe High. “We jumped out early and then we kind of got sluggish and didn’t take care of the ball.”

Bud Willis scored 18 points and Justin Pinckney added 15 as Clovis (7-0) remained undefeated heading into today’s semifinal showdown with La Cueva, which beat the Wildcats on a last-second shot in the playoffs last season en route to the Class 5A state title.

La Cueva beat Pueblo (Colo.) South 65-57 Thursday.

“It’s pretty much the same kind of team as last year,” Isler said. “They’ll come out and play us man to man; we match up with them pretty well, size-wise.”

Isler said Thursday’s game was a clash of tempos.
“It seemed like we couldn’t put any long runs together,” Isler said.

“They tried to slow the game down and we tried hard to run. But we didn’t really get to run until the fourth quarter.”
Ryan Patterson, Brock Romero and Roberto Gallegos led St. Mike’s (0-5) with six points each.
