KINGSVILLE, Texas — Junior quarterback Daniel Taylor survived five sacks by Eastern New Mexico University, throwing for 322 yards and four touchdowns Saturday night to lead Texas A&M-Kingsville past the Greyhounds 44-26 in Lone Star Conference South Division football.
Taylor completed 17 of 25 passes as the Javelinas (7-1, 4-0 South), ranked fourth in NCAA Division II, took control of the game early in the second half and extended their winning streak to seven games.
Junior quarterback Steven Hinson rushed for a game-high 113 yards for the Hounds (6-3, 2-3). He completed 2 of 6 passes — both for touchdowns.
The Hounds drove 65 yards in seven plays following the opening kickoff with sophomore Dwayne Davis scoring on a 21-yard run less than three minutes into the game. But the Javelinas tied it on their second play from scrimmage, a 65-yard pass play from Taylor to Maurice Washington.
Following a punt, Kingsville took over near midfield and moved in front just four plays later on a 33-yard pass from Taylor to Errick Lewis.
Down 17-7, the Hounds mounted an 80-yard, 11-play drive late in the half capped by sophomore Derrick Hunter’s 20-yard score on an end-around.
But the Javs covered 69 yards in 11 plays — eight of them passes — and restored a 10-point halftime lead on Taylor’s 7-yard strike to Robert Jones with 22 seconds remaining.
Taylor’s fourth TD toss, a 25-yarder to Brent Holmes, made it 31-14 early in the third quarter.
Hinson found Hunter on a 54-yard scoring pass later in the period, and threw a 6-yarder to Davis for a score to make it 38-26 with just over four minutes left. Kingsville recovered the ensuing onside kick and iced the game on a 3-yard run by junior Larry Williams.
Williams, the conference’s leading rusher, was held to 77 yards on 23 carries. Holmes caught five passes for 82 yards and Williams grabbed four for 55 got Kingsville, which ended the game with 459 yards.
Davis carried 11 times for 92 yards for the Hounds, who garnered 280 of their 358 yards on the ground.
Defensive tackle Brandon Wickware had two of Eastern’s sacks. Linebacker Jeff Howard and safety Ty Touchstone were both in on 10 tackles.
