PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team clinched its 11th Lone Star Conference tournament berth in the last 13 years Friday night with a 30-28, 31-29, 30-19 Lone Star Conference South Division win over Angelo State at Greyhound Arena.
ENMU (14-14, 6-3 South) can do no worse than tie for the third and final spot from the division with ASU (10-19, 3-4), but the Zias hold the tiebreaker over the Rambelles by virtue of a head-to-head season sweep. The top three teams in both LSC divisions qualify for the tourney, to be hosted Nov. 13-15 by South champion West Texas A&M.
The Zias traded leads with ASU throughout each of the first two games, but blew the doors off the match by bolting to leads of 6-0 and 10-1 in game 3. The Rambelles never got closer than seven points after that.
Junior Anna Bellum led ENMU with 12 kills, including two which broke a tie and ended the second game, while junior Emilie Rodman added 11 kills. Junior Kelley McGinty led the team in digs with 19.
Angelo got 16 kills from junior outside hitter Nicole Stoffel, but the Rambelles were hurt by 11 service errors in the match.
