“Matchstick Men” is a marvelous movie that will inspire and intrigue.
You definitely do not want to see it alone. Like a good book, it requires discussion afterward. Everything about the movie reels you in and you have to discuss it or you will implode.
The acting is perfect for this movie. I’ve been going through a spell lately where Nicholas Cage has gotten on my nerves. I’m not sure what started this or why it’s bothered me so, but I’m happy to announce that “Matchstick Men” has cured me. I thought Nic was wonderful in this movie and that he really brought the character to life.
Many things could have gone wrong with the on-screen adaptation of this complex character. Roy is obsessive compulsive, the outdoors freak him out, he has facial ticks and deeply depends on his little pink pills. All together this guy is a nut case, but Nicholas Cage makes him lovable and by the end of the movie you’ll feel pity and understand him.
Sam Rockwell adds flavor to Frank, Roy’s partner in crime. I hadn’t noticed Rockwell until this past week when I rented “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.” Even though the movie is a bit odd and I don’t know if I liked it or not, I loved Sam Rockwell who plays the lead. I think he’s a great actor; he has an amazing talent for playing scumbag guys and making you want to date them by the end of the movie. In both “Confessions” and “Matchstick Men” I found myself immediately attracted to his character.
Alison Lohmany also attracts attention. She plays the 14-year- old daughter to Nicholas Cage and she embodies the character perfectly. Lohman is cute, bubbly and instantly lovable.
“Matchstick Men” is a wonderful movie that touches so many things in your brain that you will find it hard to forget. Director Ridley Scott also directed “Thelma and Louise” and “Gladiator.” He has done many amazing things in his career and this is one of them.
I could go on and on about this movie, which is Oscar material, but I’ll stop now so you can go watch it yourself.
