Leola “Pat” Askew, 89, of Portales, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Heartland Continuing Care Center.
She was born on Aug. 4, 1914, in Oklahoma, to Lela and Mendle Phillips.
She attended schools in Granite, Okla., and lived in Mangum, Okla., the Richland Community and Oregon before moving to Dora in 1946. She moved to Golden Acres in Portales in 1983. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Roosevelt General Hospital and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also worked at the Inlow Youth Camp during the summer months. Family members said she enjoyed sewing, crocheting afghans, cooking and making wedding cakes, arranging and growing flowers, singing and camping.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Denver C. Askew; two brothers as small children; and three sisters: Lora Ashby, Christine Marken and one as a child.
Survivors include four daughters, Wanell Simmons of Lorenzo, Texas, Fannie Gresham of Bartlett, Tenn., Lela Victor (and husband, Wayne) of Dora and Kay Allison (Lee) of Roswell; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, M.B. Phillips Jr. (Arlene), of Vancouver, Wash.
The Revs. Bobby Fuller, Steve Smith and Kenneth Dunsworth will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Dora.
Pallbearers will be Donald Kirksey, Ryan Allison, Shane Victor, Kirk Victor, Buster Tucker, Tyrel Victor, Blake Victor, Kirk Dean Spears, and Chance Tucker.
