Dr. Jose H. Velez, 55, of Clovis, a medical doctor, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at his home.
He was born on May 2, 1948, in Lima, Peru, to Jose B. and Ana deRomero Velez.
He came to the United States in 1976 and moved to Clovis in 1982. He married Christi Clancy on Dec. 5, 1986, in Clovis. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1970 and his doctor of medicine in 1975 from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru.
In 1977 he completed his internship at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn., and part of his residency in 1978. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in 1982 at University of New Mexico.
He was a member of Inter American College of Physicians and Surgeons, New Mexico Medical Society, American Medical Association, Ducks Unlimited and Committee of 50. He donated time with other doctors around the country to help Peruvian children.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a daughter, Dariana Velez.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Kiko Velez, of the home; three daughters, Lucrecia Berridge (and husband, Matt) of Charleston, S.C., Casandra Velez of Huntsville, Texas, and Gabriela Velez of the home; a sister, Analuz Venegas (Rafael) of Lima, Peru; and his mother.
Steve McElroy will officiate the services.
Cremation will take place.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Clovis Community College Nursing Program or the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.
