The Clovis American Giants scored early and often Saturday en route to a 10-0 over the Tucumcari Elks in the championship game of the Tri-County Minor League tournament at Dickenson Field.
The Giants outscored their opponents 49 to 5 while going undefeated in the double-elimination tournament.
“It was an unbelievable experience for everyone involved,” said Giants manager Thom Moore. “We coaches can’t take any of the credit. These boys hit the ball when they had to and made the play (defensively) when they had to.”
Connor Doolittle led the Giants with key hits driving in three runs and scoring twice. Defensively, Doolittle made key plays that stopped potential Elks’ rallies, including a game-ending, unassisted double-play.
Behind the pitching of Ethan Dennie, the Giants kept the Elks on their heels the whole night.
“Ethan pitched a great game tonight just as he has all season” said Moore. “But the key tonight was a bunch of kids playing together as one.”
