Portales repeated its earlier sweep of Clovis High in tennis Monday, winning the boys match 9-0 and the girls dual 7-2 in a makeup of an earlier rainout at the CHS courts.
Both Clovis teams ended their dual schedules with records of 2-5.
“The kids definitely played better than last time,” CHS tennis coach Billie Merritt said. “We went to three sets in some matches and we had several tiebreakers.”
Andrea Curry posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over the Lady Rams’ Sara Bulls at No. 2 singles, and she teamed with Patricia Gallegos for a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Bulls and Kristen Van Wettering at No. 1 doubles. Gallegos was in position to beat Van Wettering at No. 1 singles, but lost a 7-3 second-set tiebreaker and dropped the match to her Portales opponent in three sets.
Two of the three boys doubles matches went to a third set before Portales prevailed.
The Wildcats and Lady Cats host the District 4-5A tournament Friday and Saturday. Each of the five schools can enter three players in singles and two teams in doubles.
Play is expected to begin around 2 p.m. on Friday. Merritt said she hopes two rounds can be completed on the first day before play resumes at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
