A Muleshoe man and Bailey County employee was killed Thursday in a one-vehicle rollover involving the work truck he was driving.
Mario Melendez, 24, was 13 miles south of Muleshoe driving westbound on FM 746 when his right inside rear tire blew out causing him to lose control and roll the Bailey County Precinct 2 dump truck he was driving, according to Texas Department of Safety Communications Operator Byron Ivey.
Muleshoe resident Albert Garcia, Melendez’s co-worker, said they were in the process of hauling material to repair area roads when the accident happened.
“Mario was an excellent human being, and it will be very hard to replace the type of person he was,” Garcia said.
Melendez’s wife was unavailable for comment, but Norma Perez, a close family friend, spoke on her behalf. She said Melendez was a wonderful family man who was always working to provide a good life for his family.
“Mario was a very loving husband and father. I never saw him upset or raise his voice; he always had a positive attitude about life; especially his wife they were very much in love and everybody knew that,” Perez said.
Melendez is also survived by two daughters.
