DORA — T.J. Cathey drove in four runs, including three on a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, and the Dora Coyotes rallied past Texico 11-8 Monday to clinch the District 7-1A/2A baseball championship.
Dora (10-5, 7-0 district) rallied from 6-1 and 8-5 deficits, with Cathey’s home run the key item in a six-run rally.
Texico (8-5, 4-3) closes district play at 6 p.m. Thursday against Elida at Brady Field, while Dora plays at Santa Rosa the same day. If the Coyotes beat the Lions and Texico wins, the Wolverines and Santa Rosa would have a playoff for the district’s second postseason berth at a neutral field, possibly as early as Friday.
Senior left-hander Chris Rolston was touched up for 17 hits by the Wolverines, but he walked none and struck out seven in a complete-game effort. Meantime, Texico starter Justin Loven and reliever Braden Vaughan allowed only nine Dora hits and struck out eight, but the Coyotes benefitted from seven walks and three hit batsmen.
Jesse Serrano and Logan Brown both went 3 for 5 for Texico, while Braden Vaughan, Aaron Vaughn, Joel Maldonado and Jared Curtis were all 2 for 4. Cathey led the Coyotes’ attack, finishing 3 for 4 with an RBI double in the second, while Tyler Wilhoit went 2 for 3.
